Background: Airport Maribor is located in a geopolitical region of crossing of two major Trans-European. Network road systems: Barcelona to Kiev (V. corridor) and Hamburg to Athens (X corridor). The airport also has a direct link to a very important railway route from Trieste to Vienna. Historically the airport has served airlines operating passenger flights within CEI region and cargo flights connecting CEI region with EU countries and vice versa.
Current situation: A private company owns Maribor Airport with the state providing several functions such as Air Traffic Service, Security and Customs and Immigration control. Being built 26 years ago, the infrastructure and equipment is seriously outdated and restricts the expansion of operation and limits the level of service provided to the customers, both for passengers and cargo operators. A study of airport terminal building and several support facilities upgrade is currently in course of preparation. Runway, taxiways and lightning system together with air control tower and equipment has recently been upgraded and meets all international quality and safety standards. Current traffic flow is 20 000 passengers and 30 000 tons of cargo per year.
Benefits of reconstruction: Considering the aforementioned location of Maribor Airport, the CEI and EU countries will all benefit from the services of an important regional passenger hub airport with substantial growth possibilities. All the airports around the globe can be the destination for the cargo originating from either CEI or EU countries.
