Description I've recently started a web-based utility payment service aimed towards cities here in the Midwest. The web application and interface are fully functional, and we currently have 6 cities since the launch of the site in January of 2009.
The service is simple. Our website allows customers to make their utility payment (water, sewer, trash) via the internet, 24/7/365. We currently offer multiple payment methods, including all major credit/debit cards, and electronic checks. Revenue is generated from a convenience fee charged per transaction. We do not currently charge cities for using the service, however, this can be adjusted to your liking.
The site has a management interface for the city clerks and administrators to use, which allows them to generate reports of payments received, add new customers, modify existing customers, and manually enter payment details over the phone. The city is automatically notified with an e-mail receipt of the transaction details. The customer is also automatically notified that their payment was received via e-mail.
We are currently receiving 75 payments a month within the first few months of starting the business! There is very little overhead for operating this company. In fact, the total operating costs are less than $75 a month.
Here's the deal. I work full time, I'm a full time student with a family to support, and I also run this business on the side. Needless to say, I am very busy.
